Learning and thought

“Learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous.”

ConfuciusThe Analects, 2.15 (trans. James Legge)

Why it stays with me

This is one of the best-known lines in The Analects, and it describes two opposite ways of going wrong.

The first is collecting information without ever stopping to digest it. You can read a lot and still understand very little. The second is thinking hard without enough knowledge to think with. That is how clever people end up confidently wrong.

It’s close to the motto of this site. I want to learn widely, but I also want to think carefully about what I learn, and this line reminds me that I need both.

Ayoub Khallok keeps this archive of essays, research, lessons and notes, written to understand things more clearly. More about Ayoub.
