A place to stand

“Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the Earth.”

Why it stays with me

This comes to us from later Greek writers describing Archimedes, who was explaining the principle of the lever. Different sources give slightly different wording.

Behind the boast is a real insight: a long enough lever can multiply a small force without limit. Archimedes was one of the first people to describe nature with exact mathematical laws, which is why he appears among the pioneers in The Grand Design.

I like it as an image for understanding in general. The right idea, placed in the right spot, can move things that look impossibly heavy.

Ayoub Khallok keeps this archive of essays, research, lessons and notes, written to understand things more clearly. More about Ayoub.
